Michael McDonald, A Tribute to Motown
With his distinctive, throaty baritone, Michael McDonald left an indelible signature in the ‘70s with his vocal contributions to both Steely Dan and later The Doobie Brothers. After The Doobie Brothers disbanded in 1982, McDonald embarked on a solo career, which produced such Top 10 hits as “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near),” “Sweet Freedom,” and a duet with Patti LaBelle, “On My Own.” More recently, McDonald pays tribute to the hits of Motown, releasing Motown and Motown II. This Soundstage performance focuses on his most recent release, Motown II.
Filmed in his home state of Tennessee, McDonald’s blue-eyed soul interpretations are given the star treatment when gospel legend Billy Preston, R&B diva Toni Braxton, a cappella group Take 6, the unforgettable India.Arie and cast contribute throughout the set. From the rollicking “Second That Emotion” to the poignant “What’s Going On,” a number of Motown’s finest artists and songwriters are rightfully honored during the show.
